Symptoms

Assume that you have a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 instance that has Cumulative Update 6 for SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed. In this situation, when you execute a CREATE PARTITION FUNCTION statement, an assertion failure occurs. Additionally, you receive an error message that resembles the following:

Location: <Drive>:\sql10_main_t\sql\ntdbms\msql\ddl\prtddl.cpp:1871Expression: FALSESPID: <SPID>Process ID: <Process ID>Description: Invalid switch valueMsg 3624, Level 20, State 1, Line 1A system assertion check has failed. Check the SQL Server error log for details. Typically, an assertion failure is caused by a software bug or data corruption. To check for database corruption, consider running DBCC CHECKDB. If you agreed to send dumps to Microsoft during setup, a mini dump will be sent to Microsoft. An update might be available from Microsoft in the latest Service Pack or in a QFE from Technical Support. Msg 0, Level 20, State 0, Line 0A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.

Note This issue only occurs when the customized SQL_EBCDIC277_2_CP1_CS_AS collation is registered in the database in which you execute the CREATE PARTITION FUNCTION statement. To identify the databases that have this issue, run the following SQL script:

SELECT name FROM master..sysdatabases WHERE version = 707
