Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:

You set up a data refresh schedule (SQL Server 2012 SP1) or data refresh schedule (SQL Server 2014) on a Microsoft Excel workbook by using the PowerPivot 2012 SP1 for SharePoint 2013 add-in for Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 1(SP1) or PowerPivot 2014 for SharePoint 2013 add-in for SQL Server 2014.

You specify email addresses that should receive notification messages of data update failures.
In this scenario, notification messages are not sent to the specified email addresses when data updates fail.
Resolution
The issue was first fixed in the following cumulative update of SQL Server.
Cumulative Update 1 for SQL Server 2014 /en-us/help/2931693
Cumulative Update 7 for SQL Server 2012 SP1 /en-us/help/2894115
