Symptoms

When this issue occurs, the backup operation fails and you receive an error message that looks something like the following:

[SSMBackup2WAAdminXevent] Database Name = <database_name>, Database ID = <database_id>, Stage = <stage_name>, Error Code = 3002, Error Message = Cannot BACKUP or RESTORE a database snapshot. [SQLSTATE 42000]BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally. [SQLSTATE 42000], Additional Info = Retrying Backup.

Cause

This issue occurs because backing up a database snapshot isn't supported in SQL Server 2014 SP1 and SP2.

Resolution

Service pack information

This issue was fixed in the SQL Server 2016 Service Pack 1 (SP1). See the SQL Server 2016 build versions.

Cumulative update information

The issue was fixed in the following cumulative update of SQL Server:
