Symptoms

Assume that you use SQL Server 2017 Analysis Services (SSAS) and Microsoft SQL Server 2016 SSAS in tabular mode. The SSAS instance may crash when you access .vmp files. Additionally, an error message that resembles the following is logged in the msmdsrv.log file.

The file 'FilePath\FileName.vmp' could not be opened. Please check the file for permissions or see if other applications locked it. (Source: FilePath\FileName\msmdsrv.log, Type: 3, Category: 289, Event ID: 0xC1210023)

Resolution

This issue is fixed in the following cumulative updates for SQL Server:

       Cumulative Update 1 for SQL Server 2017

       Cumulative Update 4 for SQL Server 2016 SP1
