Symptoms

An "out of memory" error may occur even when there are many free pages in Microsoft SQL Server. Additionally, you receive a message that resembles the following:

date time Failed to allocate reserved pages: FAIL_RESERVED_PAGE_ALLOCATION 1

Note: This is frequently observed when running DBCC CHECKDB, but is not exclusive to this command.

Resolution

A fix for this issue is included in the following updates for SQL Server:

          Cumulative Update 10 for SQL Server 2017

          Cumulative Update 3 for SQL Server 2016 SP2
