Symptoms
When you try to back up database master to disk in SQL Server 2017, stack overflow occurs and the SQL Server crashes. Additionally, you may receive the following error messages:
Msg 3038, Level 16, State 1, Line LineNumber
The file name "c:Master.bak" is invalid as a backup device name. Reissue the BACKUP statement with a valid file name.Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line LineNumber
BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally.
Status
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
