If your organization uses Microsoft Information Protection (MIP) sensitivity labels, you may occasionally be unable to view content created by the Planner Agent in a Planner plan. This article explains why this happens and what you can do to resolve it.

What is a sensitivity label mismatch?

A sensitivity label mismatch occurs when content created by the Planner Agent is protected with a higher sensitivity label than the plan itself. When this happens, Planner cannot display that content, even if you have access to it.

Why this happens

Planner uses sensitivity labels in two different ways:

  • Container labels apply to Microsoft 365 groups, Teams, and SharePoint sites. These labels control who can access the workspace and how it can be shared.

  • Content labels apply directly to files, including Loop components created by the Planner Agent. These labels can encrypt content or restrict actions such as copying or printing.

Planner Agent output (such as task execution results or status reports) is stored in Loop files, which use content-level sensitivity labels. If the label on that content is more restrictive than the label on the plan, Planner cannot render it.

Common scenarios where this can occur include:

  • The plan does not have a sensitivity label, but your organization applies a default label to Loop files.

  • The Planner Agent uses files with higher sensitivity labels than the plan as part of its work. The Planner Agent will always apply the most restrictive label found in its sources to avoid reducing data protection.

How to resolve the issue

The most effective way to resolve a sensitivity label mismatch is to update the plan’s sensitivity label so it matches or exceeds the label applied to the Planner Agent content. To do this:

  1. Select the Sensitivity Label icon next to the plan title

  2. Select the updated sensitivity label that you would like to be applied to the plan

Important: Higher sensitivity labels may restrict guest access or sharing, depending on your organization's policies.

What happens when the plan label is updated?

When a group owner upgrades the plan’s sensitivity label:

  • Planner can display Planner Agent content that was previously blocked.

  • The plan’s protection level is aligned with the content it contains.

  • The sensitivity label on existing files does not change.

Alternative option: Open the content in Loop

If you do not want to change the plan’s sensitivity label, you can open the Planner Agent output directly in Loop, provided you have permission to access the file. Loop supports content-level sensitivity labels even when Planner cannot display the content.
