Applies ToWindows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Windows Server 2008 R2 for Itanium-Based Systems Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a Windows Server 2008 R2 failover cluster that has the Cluster Shared Volumes feature enabled.

  • You perform multiple backup operations in parallel on a cluster shared volume.

In this scenario, the Cluster service on a cluster node stops unexpectedly. This causes all resources on the cluster node to be failed over to the other cluster nodes.

Cause

This issue occurs because of a race condition in the Cluster service. When the race condition occurs, a time-out message that is marked as a fatal error is sent from the cluster shared volume filter to the Cluster service. This behavior causes the Cluster service to stop. In fact, the time-out message is not a fatal error, and the Cluster service should not stop.
