Symptoms
On a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, you have a volume that is referenced in the PATH system-environment variable. If the volume is inaccessible, the Lanmanserver service does not start after you restart the computer or after you stop and then restart the service manually. Additionally, event ID 7023 is logged in the System log.
Note The scenarios in which a volume is inaccessible include the following:-
The volume is offline. In this scenario, event ID 7023 and the following "The device is not ready" error message are logged in the System log when this issue occurs:

The read and write operations to the volume are blocked. In this scenario, event ID 7023 and the following "Incorrect function" error message are logged in the System log when this issue occurs:

Important This article does not apply to Universal Naming Convention (UNC) entries in the PATH system environment variable.

Resolution
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing.
