Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) is a super resolution technology built into Windows that brings high-quality upscaling to a player's existing game library on Copilot+ PCs and the ROG Xbox Ally X. Without upscaling, players often must choose between visual quality and frame rate: raising resolution or graphics settings increases visual quality but can reduce frame rate, while lowering them improves frame rate but at the cost of image quality. Auto SR addresses this trade-off by allowing the game to render at a lower resolution, then upscaling the image to a higher resolution, simultaneously giving players both detailed visuals and smoother frame rates.

Quick Start Guide
The Display widget in Game Bar is your main interface for Auto SR to enable the feature per game, get setup guidance, and check status without leaving your game. Some steps also require adjustments in the game's own settings. To turn Auto SR on:
-
Launch your game: You may see a notification that Auto SR is available.
-
Enable Auto SR: Open the Auto SR tab in the Display widget by clicking the notification or press
or Win + G and go to Widgets Menu > Display > Auto SR. Turn on the following toggles:-
Always use with this game
-
Show in-game status indicator
-
-
Adjust resolution and display mode (if needed): Auto SR applies only when the toggle from step 2 is on and you're using a supported resolution and display mode.
-
In the game settings, select a supported resolution
-
Set the display mode to Fullscreen or Exclusive Fullscreen.
-
-
Check display settings (if Auto SR is still off): In the General tab of the Display widget, change the display resolution to a supported value.
-
Confirm Auto SR is being applied: Look for the Auto SR status indicator
in the game window and enjoy! If the indicator is not visible, check the Auto SR tab in the Display widget for details about what needs to be fixed.
Note: Next time you launch this game, Auto SR turns on automatically as long as the resolution and display mode remain at supported settings.
Auto SR Game Bar Widget Overview
The Auto SR tab in the Display widget shows whether Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) is active for your current game, and if not, why not without leaving the game. There are two main pieces: the widget itself and Game Bar notifications.
The Current Status shows whether Auto SR is active for the running game. Potential statuses include:
-
On: Auto SR is actively enhancing your game.
-
Off, Action Required: Auto SR is enabled for the game, but not currently active due to an unsupported resolution or needing to restart your game.
-
Off: Auto SR is turned off for the game and not actively running.
Always use with this game toggle is used to turn Auto SR on or off for the game. This can be used while the game is running to toggle it on and off to see the difference in visual quality. This is equivalent to the per-game setting in Window Settings described below.
Show in-game status indicator toggle is used to turn on an in-game indicator to easily tell whether or not Auto SR is running on your game. When on & active, you will see this icon in the corner of your game screen:
Game Bar notifications may also be shown to raise awareness of Auto SR status in the game – whether it’s turned on, available to be turned on, or requires an action to activate in the game.
Advanced Configuration with Windows Settings and Notifications
When Game Bar isn't installed, use Windows notifications or Windows Settings to enable Auto SR for individual games, turn it on for all supported games at once, or automatically adjust your display resolution when a game launches. Learn more in the sections below.
Auto SR can be turned on directly from Windows notifications when Game Bar itself is not installed or its notifications are disabled.
To enable Auto SR for a game:
-
The first time you launch a supported game, you'll see a Use Auto SR opt-in notification.
-
Select Turn on to enable Auto SR for that game.
-
If your resolution and display mode are at a compatible setting, Auto SR turns on immediately and shows an Auto SR is on notification.
-
Otherwise, a follow-up notification prompts you to adjust the resolution or restart the game if you have previously turned Auto SR off (shown below).
Note: Once enabled, Auto SR applies automatically on future launches whenever the game is at compatible settings.
To disable Auto SR for a game:
-
Launch the game, and you'll see an Auto SR is on notification.
-
Select Turn off to disable Auto SR.
To turn Auto SR on or off for a game:
-
Select Start > Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Custom settings for applications and find the game (or add the game’s .exe file).
-
Select the game and set the Automatic super resolution toggle to On or Off.
To enable Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) for all supported games, turn on the Auto SR default instead of configuring each game individually.
To turn Auto SR on for all supported games:
-
Select Start > Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
-
Under Default settings, turn Automatic super resolution On or Off.
How the Auto SR default and per-game settings interact
Enabling Auto SR for a game overrides the Auto SR default set for all games. These settings can be used together in two ways:
-
Enable Auto SR for all but a few games: Turn on the Auto SR default setting, then turn Auto SR off for the specific games you want to exclude.
-
To enable Auto SR for only select games only: Turn off the Auto SR default setting, then turn on Auto SR for the specific games you want to include.
Note: Adjustments such as in-game resolution settings may still need to be made to individual games for Auto SR to be applied, as described in the previous section.
Windows Settings can have your game automatically launch at a resolution supported by Auto SR and restore it when you exit. This is useful for players who do not want to set resolution themselves and for games that don't expose their own render-resolution settings (such as games that only offer borderless windowed mode).
-
Go to Start > Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Custom settings for applications and select your game.
-
Under Maximum display resolution setting, the drop-down options will show Auto SR-capable resolutions.
-
Choose one of the listed Auto SR-capable resolutions.
-
When configured, this setting will change your display to the set resolution when the game is launched, and limit the game from seeing higher resolutions. When the game exits, your original display resolution will be restored.

Frequently asked questions
Auto SR is not on by default, it is an opt-in feature.
Note: On legacy devices with Snapdragon X Series processor, Auto SR was applied by default to a set of games verified by Microsoft including BeamNG.drive, Borderlands 3, Control (dx11), Dark Souls III, God of War, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, Sekiro Shadows Die Twice, Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2 and The Witcher 3.
Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) works with specific render resolutions that vary by device. In general, Auto SR enhances games that render below 1080p.
If your game is running at an unsupported resolution, you’ll see a notification prompting you to adjust the resolution. The Auto SR tab in the Xbox Game Bar Display widget also shows a device‑specific recommended resolution.
Adjust the game’s resolution
How you change the render resolution depends on the game.
Use in‑game settings (recommended)
Most games that support Fullscreen or Exclusive fullscreen mode let you change the render resolution in their settings.
-
Look for a setting named Resolution or Render resolution.
-
This setting is typically found under Graphics or Display.
Change the display resolution:
Some games only support Borderless windowed fullscreen mode. In these cases, changing the in‑game resolution may not be available or may not affect the game’s output resolution.
If so, change your display resolution instead by using one of the following options:
-
Set a Maximum display resolution for the game in Windows graphics settings.
-
Change the display resolution in the Xbox Game Bar Display widget.
-
Go to Start >Settings > System > Display and adjust the resolution before launching the game.
After you select a supported resolution, restart the game if prompted.
The Requirements section lists the supported range. Players can also find supported resolutions on device by checking either:
-
The Game Bar widget status (Auto SR tab in the Display widget)
-
TheMaximum display resolution drop-down in Windows Settings (Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Custom settings for applications). The drop-down lists only Auto SR-capable resolutions.
To check if you have the latest version of Auto SR, open the Microsoft Store app on your device to check if an update is available for the Auto Super Resolution Package.
Tip: To ensure Auto SR is always up to date, turn on automatic app updates.
Auto SR does not currently support HDR content. To utilize HDR in games that support it, you must turn off Auto SR.
Yes, this is controlled by the Maximum display resolution per-game setting. The default setting is Off. To enable automatic resolution changes when launching your game, select one of the available resolutions from the drop-down menu. All resolution options support Auto SR on the device.
Auto SR is designed to upscale from low render resolution to high output resolution. Some games might have challenges rendering fine text or UI elements at the low resolution. Microsoft has a verified list of games that avoid these types of problems. If you feel the quality loss is detrimental, you may be able to find an alternate resolution that works better, or you can turn off Auto SR.
The Auto SR AI model has been trained on a wide range of games and game styles. However, there may be times when it is not perfect in a particular rendering situation. Microsoft has a verified list of games that look great, and we find the model does well on most games. Of course, if you find a game for which you do not like Auto SR, you can submit feedback about the game or turn off Auto SR.
Auto SR is integrated into the Windows operating system and display pipeline, functioning independently of the game's own scaling technologies. While enabling or disabling in-game scaling can impact quality or frame rate, the specific results vary based on the game, settings, and your system.
Capture tools like Game Bar, Snipping Tool, and others are based on capturing the contents of a window. Due to how Auto SR integrates with your PC display, these capture tools will generally not capture the Auto SR image that you see on the screen because it is larger than the game’s window.
Yes, Auto SR supports x64 games both natively and via emulation on arm64 devices.
Note: For an evolving list of games that work with Auto SR on arm64, visit http://www.worksonwoa.com, a third-party open-source site that Microsoft has contributed compatibility data to. From the games page, select Auto SR filter and then select “Yes, out-of-box” and “Yes, opt-in” for the complete list of Auto SR games.
