Map of the Internet (MOI) provides performance routing data used by Microsoft services to enable fast and efficient delivery of Microsoft content and services to our customers.
How does it work?
MOI consists of small software agents that run on Microsoft software to ensure users have an optimal experience with cloud products. These clients perform measurements and upload results to MOI service endpoints.
These results are aggregated and used to create performance routing maps, which optimizes how internet traffic routes between customers and Microsoft services.
Privacy
All data collected by MOI clients and reported to Microsoft are anonymous and don't include identifying client or system information. MOI only uses data in aggregate to construct maps.
Microsoft Endpoints
MOI clients can reach out to several Microsoft endpoints. The endpoints selected by the clients are chosen at random. If your firewall or network settings block traffic to these endpoints, your device won't contribute to performance maps for this service.
Some of the endpoints measured are listed in the following table. These are only the primary endpoints that MOI clients reach out to. Requests to these endpoints can be redirected via CNAMEs according to Microsoft DNS settings. These CNAMEs are required to support many Microsoft products and services.
