Image resolution and size change from a webpage in Excel 2007/2010

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

- You create a new Excel workbook in Excel 2007 or Excel 2010.

- You insert an image into the workbook.

- You save the workbook as a web page.

or

- You have a file created in Excel 2003.

- The file contains images.

- You open the file and save it as a web page in Excel 2007 or Excel 2010.

In these scenarios, the image resolution and the file size of the image in the web page unexpectedly changes. The change is obvious in comparison to the image in the file created in Excel 2003.

Cause

This behavior occurs because Excel 2007 and Excel 2010 sets the image resolution to 150 dpi when saving a file as a web page by default.
