Description of the security update for Word 2016: July 10, 2018

Applies to: Word 2016

This security update resolves vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office that could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted Office file. To learn more about these vulnerabilities, see Microsoft Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures CVE-2018-8310.

Note To apply this security update, you must have the release version of Word 2016 installed on the computer.

Be aware that the update in the Microsoft Download Center applies to the Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2016. It doesn't apply to the Office 2016 Click-to-Run editions, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home (see Determining your Office version).

Improvements and fixes

This security update contains improvements and fixes for the following nonsecurity issues:

  • When you drag and drop an attachment to an email message in Outlook 2016, the case of the file name extension of the attachment is changed unexpectedly. This issue occurs if the last character of the file name is capitalized. For example, filE.docx may be displayed as filE.DOCX.

  • Assume that you apply Hidden formatting to a Word table (by using the Hidden effect in the Font dialog box), and that the table contains a bookmark, some text, and a URL in a Word document. After you close and then reopen the document, the table cell and bookmark are displayed unexpectedly.

  • Memory leaks when you open and close a document that contains Embedded Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) objects in Word 2016.

  • When you work with a document that contains a custom property on a SharePoint server, the Getting list of available content types and properties dialog box appears at random times and prevents you from working with the document until the dialog box disappears.
