Switch between modes

Your Surface Book is the ultimate laptop—it transforms to work any way you do. Ready to adapt to the way you want to work, whether as a laptop, tablet, or portable studio. Here's how to switch between modes.

Get things done

Surface Book comes in laptop mode, with the screen and keyboard attached. When you're done using it, close the screen to make it sleep.

Use your Surface as a tablet

Need to move around and take notes with your Surface Pen? Detach the keyboard to transform your Surface Book into a tablet. Then use the Surface Pen, the touchscreen, and the touch keyboard to get around.

  1. Press and hold the Detach key until the light on the key turns green.

  2. Pull the screen away from the keyboard. You'll have a few seconds to detach it before it reconnects automatically.

Note: Surface Book uses battery power to detach the keyboard. If battery power is low, you'll have to wait until your Surface Book has recharged before detaching it.

The screen has its own battery, but you'll need to reattach it to the keyboard when it's time to recharge.

Line up the keyboard with the screen and then click the keyboard into place.

Studio Mode

Transform your Surface Book into a portable studio with the keyboard still attached and folded under the screen. This means you can charge your Surface and use the USB ports. Plus, you'll have more battery time to draw, take notes, and surf the web.

To do this, disconnect the screen. Then, reconnect the screen and the keyboard so the back of the screen is facing the keys.

When you want to make a presentation or watch a movie, connect the screen and the keyboard so the back of the screen is facing the keys.
