You can use your Surface Pro 4 with the Surface Pro 3 Docking Station, but youll need to get a free adapter so your Surface Pro 4 will fit properly.
Docking station options for Surface Pro 4
You can use a docking station to connect your Surface Pro 4 to a monitor, wired network, audio system, full-size keyboard, printer, and more. Surface Pro 4 has two docking station options:
- Surface Dock: Compatible with Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro 4, and Surface Book, Surface Dock is a port replicator with a compact design that doesnt require you to dock your Surface in a frame. Instead, you connect your Surface to Surface Dock using a single cable. For more info, see Using Surface Dock.
- Surface Pro 3 Docking Station: If you already have a docking station for Surface Pro 3, you can use it with your Surface Pro 4. But for your Surface Pro 4 to fit correctly into the docking station, youll need to use the Surface Pro 4 Adapter for Surface Pro 3 Docking Station. The adapter is available from your local Microsoft Store, or you can go to Device service and repair and select Replace an accessory to order one.
Using Surface Pro 4 with the Surface Pro 3 Docking Station
Once you have the Surface Pro 4 Adapter for Surface Pro 3 Docking Station, its easy to connect your Surface Pro 4 to your Surface Pro 3 Docking Station. Before getting started, make sure you have all the necessary cables and cords for your docking station and accessories.
First, youll need to set up your docking station and plug in your peripherals. Then place the adapter in your docking station and slide your Surface Pro 4 in so that it sits on top of the adapter.
Set up your docking station
- Plug the AC end of the docking station's power cord into an electrical outlet or power strip and plug the other end into the charging port on the docking station.
If you want to use a wired network connection, connect a network cable to the Ethernet port on the back of the docking station.
Connect your computer peripherals to the USB ports on the docking station.
Connect a cable from your monitor to the Mini DisplayPort on the docking station.NoteIf your monitor cable doesnt have a Mini DisplayPort connector, youll need to buy another cable or an adapter. For more info on adapters, see Connect Surface to a TV, monitor, or projector .
Connect any audio accessories such as speakers.
Place the adapter and Surface in the docking station
Your Surface Pro 4 sits on top of the adapter, allowing the sides of the docking station to connect properly.
Make sure that both sides of your docking station are pulled out before inserting the adapter.
Slide the adapter into your docking station.
Unplug the power supply from your Surface Pro 4 and remove any attached accessories. If youre using a Typing Cover, open it so it lies flat.
You can leave a microSD card in the microSD card slot.
Slide your Surface Pro 4 down into the docking station so that it sits on top of the adapter.
Slide the sides of the docking station into the sides of your Surface.
Install Surface and Windows updates
To ensure that Surface Pro 4 can take full advantage of your Surface Pro 3 Docking Station, install the latest Surface and Windows updates.
Go to Start , and select Settings > Update & security > Windows Update.
Select Check for updates. If updates are available, select Details.
- Select the updates you want to install, and select Install.
You may need to restart your Surface after the updates have installed.
