Description of the security update for Excel 2016: July 9, 2019

This security update resolves a remote code execution vulnerability that exists in Microsoft Excel if the software does not correctly handle objects in memory. Note To apply this security update, you must have the release version of Excel 2016 installed on the computer.

Be aware that the update in the Microsoft Download Center applies to the Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2016. It doesn't apply to the Office 2016 Click-to-Run editions, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home (see What version of Office am I using?).

Improvements and fixes

This security update contains a fix for the following nonsecurity issue:

  • When you switch rows and columns in a Pivot Chart, and then you undo the switch operation, Microsoft Excel 2016 crashes.
