Symptoms

Assume that you have a failover cluster instance (FCI) of SQL Server 2016 and 2017. If the FCI has only Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV) for cluster disks, you may receive the following error message when you try to check the Enable FILESTREAM for file I/O access option in Microsoft SQL Server Configuration Manager:

There was an unknown error applying the FILESTREAM settings. Check the parameters are valid. (0x800710dc)

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

This issue is fixed in the following cumulative updates for SQL Server:

Workaround

To work around this issue, you can use the following methods:

  1. Enable the FILESTREAM for file I/O access feature during SQL Server Setup.

  2. Temporarily add a shared disk and a dependency on the disk to the FCI to enable the FILESTREAM for file I/O access feature. As soon as the feature is added, the shared disk can be removed.
