You receive a blank screen when you log on to a terminal server that is running Windows Server 2008

Applies to: Windows Server 2008 StandardWindows Server 2008 Standard without Hyper-VWindows Server 2008 Enterprise

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have the Terminal Services role installed on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2).
  • Users create many terminal server sessions to the terminal server every day.
In this scenario, you receive a blank screen after you log on to the terminal server. Additionally, the next time that you log on to the terminal server successfully, you find that the following error message was logged in the Application log at the time that you received the blank screen:
Source: Application Error

Date: Date
Event ID: 1000

Task Category: (100)

Level: Error

Keywords: Classic

User: N/A

Computer: Computer

Faulting application Explorer.EXE, version Number, time stamp Number, faulting module SHLWAPI.dll, version Number, time stamp Number, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset Number, process id Number, application start time Number.
Note The faulting module is SHLWAPI.dll.

This problem occurs because Windows Explorer (Explorer.exe) does not correctly verify a pointer that points to an item identifier list. Therefore, Windows Explorer (Explorer.exe) may access an invalid memory address.
