Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You enable the Single Instance Storage (SIS) feature on one or more volumes that are hosted on a computer that is running Windows Storage Server 2008 R2.

  • You configure Distributed File System (DFS) Replication for a read-only replicated folder on one of these volumes.

In this scenario, the SIS service does not de-duplicate files that are located in the replicated folder.

Note To check whether files are de-duplicated by the SIS service, run the following command:

sisadmin /v

Cause

This issue occurs because DFS Replication read-only mini-filter driver (DfsrRo.sys) prevents the SIS service from changing the files that are located in the replicated folder. Therefore, the SIS service cannot de-duplicate these files.
