You are offered security update 973924 for the Visual C++ 2008 redistributable package after you install the Visual Studio 2010 Release Candidate

This article applies to the following product:
  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Release Candidate

Symptoms

You install one of the following versions of Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Release Candidate:
  • Visual Studio 2010 Professional Release Candidate
  • Visual Studio 2010 Premium Release Candidate
  • Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate Release Candidate
When you run Microsoft Update to search for new updates, you are offered the following security update:
Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (KB973924)

Cause

Visual Studio 2010 Release Candidate includes a copy of the Visual C++ 9.0 Redistributable. The copy of the Visual C++ 9.0 Redistributable in Visual Studio 2010 Release Candidate contains a version of the security update that is newer than the version that is included in security update 973924. However, this copy does not include certain registry keys that are used to identify the version of the security update in the redistributable. Microsoft Update detects the new version without the required registry keys, but incorrectly flags security update 973924 as required.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install security update 973924. After you install this security update, you will not be offered this security update again through Microsoft Update.
