- You are not running Windows XP or Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1). Windows Update offers Windows XP SP2 only to computers that can install Windows XP SP2. You may already be running Windows XP SP2, or you may be running another version of Windows.
- You, or a system administrator, used a toolkit to temporarily block delivery of Windows XP SP2 to a computer from Automatic Updates or from Windows Update.
- A third-party advertising program that is named T.V. Media is installed on your computer. (T.V. Media is from Total Velocity Corporation.) To help you avoid a failed Windows XP SP2 installation from Windows Update or from Automatic Updates, we have blocked the download of Windows XP SP2 to computers that have T.V. Media installed unless Critical Update 885523 is also installed.
- Your computer uses an Intel Pentium 4 or Intel Celeron D processor that is based on Prescott C-0 stepping. You must install this update before you install Windows XP SP2. To help you avoid a failed Windows XP SP2 installation from Windows Update or from Automatic Updates, we have blocked the download of Windows XP SP2 for computers that use one of these processors until Critical Update 885626 is installed.885626 Your computer stops responding when you restart to complete the installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2
- Currently, Automatic Updates delivers Windows XP SP2 to a limited number of computers each day to prevent overloading various connection points on the Internet. Your computer is one of the computers still waiting to be selected for the delivery of Windows XP SP2.
Method 1: If you are not running Windows XP or Windows XP SP1If you are already running Windows XP SP2, you will not see Windows XP SP2 on the Windows Update Web site.
If you are not sure if you are running Windows XP Service Pack 2, click Start, click Run, type winver, and then click OK. Look for the words "Service Pack 2" at the end of the line that begins with "Version 5.1."
If you are running another version of Windows, such as Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, Microsoft Windows NT, Microsoft Windows 2000, or Microsoft Windows Server 2003, you cannot install Windows XP SP2. You must install Windows XP before you can install Windows XP SP2.
Method 2: If T.V. Media from Total Velocity Corporation is installed on your computerWe discovered a compatibility issue between Windows XP SP2 installation and a third-party advertising program that is named T.V. Media after Windows XP SP2 was completed. The issue occurs when you have T.V. Media installed on your computer, and you try to install Windows XP SP2. In this case, you receive the following error message and the Windows XP SP2 installation process fails:
If you want to install Windows XP SP2, you must completely remove T.V. Media from your system or install the 885523 update. The simplest way to remove T.V. Media is to use the Adware T.V. Media Program Removal Tool (KB 886590) that removes T.V. Media. After you remove T.V. Media or install the 885523 update, Windows XP SP2 will be available to install from Windows Update or from Automatic Updates. For more information about the Adware T.V. - T.V. Media is typically installed when you install other programs or when you visit Internet Web sites that are supported by T.V. Media advertising. Because of this installation behavior, T.V. Media may be unwanted software.
- If you want to reinstall T.V. Media after you install Windows XP SP2, you must locate the program or the Web site that originally installed T.V. Media.

Method 3: If you are running an Intel Pentium 4 or Intel Celeron D processor that is based on Prescott C-0 steppingIf your computer contains an Intel Pentium 4 or Intel Celeron D processor that is based on Prescott C-0 stepping, and Critical Update 885626 is not yet installed, Windows Update will not offer to download Windows XP SP2. Microsoft and Intel have released an updated processor driver that will help prevent this installation failure. We recommend that you install Critical Update 885626, and rescan your system with Windows Update to install Windows XP SP2.
To determine whether your computer has this previously mentioned processor, click Start, click Run, type msinfo32, and then press ENTER. Look for the line that begins with “Processor" in the right pane of the System Information window. If your computer has this blocked processor, MSInfo32 will display the following text:
