Management Reporter 2012 report may return no data after you change to Dynamics SL Data Mart Provider

This article provides a resolution for the issue that occurs after you change to Dynamics SL Data Mart Provider.

Applies to:   Microsoft Management Reporter 2012, Microsoft Dynamics SL 2011, Microsoft Dynamics SL 2011 Service Pack 1
Original KB number:   2807488

Symptoms

Your Management Reporter 2012 reports may return no data after you change from the Dynamics SL data provider to the Dynamics SL data mart adapter. You may also see plus signs (+) in your row definitions under the Link to Financial Dimension column.

Cause

Management Reporter uses the dimension name to identify the segments used in your report definitions. These dimension names are pulled into the Dynamics SL data mart adapter differently than the Dynamics SL data provider. If the dimension name in the report does not match the name in Dynamics SL data mart adapter, the report will not generate correctly.

Example 1:

In Microsoft Dynamics SL, the accounts in the Chart of Accounts (01.260.00) in General Ledger are represented by their own Management Reporter dimension.

  • This dimension is called Natural in the Dynamics SL data provider.
  • This dimension is called Account in the Dynamics SL data mart adapter.

Example 2:

In a Microsoft Dynamics SL demo database, open Flexkey Definition (21.320.00) in Shared Information. Specify SUBACCOUNT in Field Type. You see that Reporting Unit is the description of Seg #1.

  • This dimension is called Segment_02 in the Dynamics SL data provider.
  • This dimension is called Reporting Unit in the Dynamics SL data mart adapter.

More information

The Management Reporter 2012 TDBX Update tool can be used to update the dimension names. To use the tool, you must first export your reports from MR. To do this, select Company and then select Building Block Groups. Select your building block group and then select Export. Select all Reports, Rows, Columns, and Trees. Select Export and then select a location to save the .TDBX file to. Once you have saved the .TDBX file, follow these steps to use the tool:

  1. Select: Dynamics AX Management Reporter 2012 TDBX Update Diagnostic. The name contains Dynamics AX, but this will work for all ERPs.
  2. Select Create and Download.
  3. Choose to Run or Save.
  4. Browse to the location of the TDBX file you created.
  5. Select the dimension name you want to change. Using Example 1 from above, you would select Natural.
  6. Select Next and then type the new name for the dimension. Using Example 1 from above, you would type Account.
  7. Select Next and a new .TDBX file will be created. The new file name will be Updated.tdbx and will be created at the same location as your original .TDBX file.

You can now import the updated TDBX file by selecting Company and then selecting Building Block Groups, in MR. Select New and create a new building block group. Select Import and browse to the Updated.tdbx file and then select Open. Once the import has completed, select Company and then select Companies. Select your company, select Modify and select the new building block group.
