DisableCopyToFileSystem broken in Outlook 2013


In Microsoft Outlook 2013, when you attempt to drag or copy a message from Outlook to the desktop or a folder in Windows, you receive the following:

The Microsoft Exchange Server administrator has prohibited copying or moving items from this account.

However, after clicking OK, the message is still copied to the selected destination in Windows.


In Microsoft Outlook 2013, the following registry value has been applied:

REG_MULTI_SZ: DisableCopyToFileSystem

Value: *, or a specified domain

The DisableCopyToFileSystem registry value is intended to disable copying Outlook data to the Windows file system, but does not work in builds of Microsoft Outlook 2013 earlier than 15.0.4623.1000. To determine the specific build of your Outlook 2013 version, from the File tab in Outlook 2013, click Office Account, and click About Outlook.

DisableCopyToFileSystem can be applied in both the regular and Policies hive of Current User; however, this value is not included in the group policy template for Outlook.

To prevent the error message described in the Symptoms section of this article, remove the DisableCopyToFileSystem value from the Windows registry.
