FIX: An internal exception access violation occurs and the SSAS server stops responding

Applies to: SQL Server 2017 DeveloperSQL Server 2017 EnterpriseSQL Server 2017 Enterprise Core

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a computer that has Microsoft SQL Server 2016 Analysis Services (SSAS 2016) installed.
  • There are many users who belong to different roles in SSAS 2016.
  • The partitions have a Relational Online Analytical Processing (ROLAP) writeback function.
  • Every user establishes a create session.
  • Users read data from the ROLAP partition by using a SELECT statement.
  • Users write new values in the ROLAP partition so that the UPDATE CUBE function is run in their own session.
  • After the UPDATE CUBE function is run several times, the ClearCache command is run to clear the SSAS caches.

In this scenario, after several iterations of reading, writing, and updating the ROLAP partition by users, an internal exception access violation occurs, and the SSAS server stops responding. Additionally, you have to restart SSAS 2016.

The fix for this problem is included in the following updates for SQL Server:

Cumulative Update 8 for SQL Server 2017

Cumulative Update 1 for SQL Server 2016 Service Pack 2

Cumulative Update 9 for SQL Server 2016 Service Pack 1
