FIX: Publishing MDS data from Excel fails when you save the changes to workbook, close and reopen it in SQL Server 2016 and 2017

Applies to: SQL Server 2016 DeveloperSQL Server 2016 EnterpriseSQL Server 2016 Enterprise Core

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have Master Data Services (MDS) for Microsoft SQL Server 2016 or 2017 installed.
  • You install the SQL Server 2016 or 2017 MDS Add-in for Microsoft Excel.
  • You open one workbook that's connected to MDS and make changes to MDS data, save and close the workbook.

In this scenario, when you open the workbook and try to publish the data, you will fail to publish and receive an error message that resembles the following:

"Active sheet does not contain MDS data."
