PowerPivot: You cannot edit embedded Excel workbooks in Word when PowerPivot is enabled

Consider the following scenario. You install the PowerPivot add-in for Excel. You then embed a Microsoft Office Excel 2010 workbook in a Microsoft Office Word document. When you try to activate the workbook for editing in Office Word, you receive the following error message:

The server application, source file, or item cannot be found. Make sure the application is properly installed, and that it has not been deleted, moved, renamed or blocked by policy.

Status: Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

To resolve this problem, disable the PowerPivot add-in in the Excel 2010 workbook before you embed it in the Word document. To disable the PowerPivot add-in using the Excel interface, go to File > Options > Add-Ins. Select Manage COM Add-Ins and click Go. Uncheck the box next to PowerPivot for Excel and click OK.

To disable the PowerPivot add-in using the Registry Editor, click Start > Run and type regedit, then press Enter. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Excel\Addins\Microsoft.AnalysisServices.Modeler.FieldList . Right click the LoadBehavior key and choose Modify. Change the value from 3 to 0 and then click OK and exit the Registry Editor.
