The Office Web App cannot open an Office document in Office if the action is triggered from a 64-bit web browser

Symptoms

You sign in to OneDrive, and you open a Microsoft Office document in an Office web application, such as the Microsoft Office Word Online. Then, you try to open the document in a corresponding desktop Microsoft Office 2010 application. However, the document does not open, and you receive an error message that resembles the following:

To open this document, your computer must be running a supported version of Microsoft Office_application and a browser that supports opening files directly from the Office Online.

If you have an older version of Office or no Office at all, you can try Microsoft Office 2010 for free.

Additionally, if you try to open a Microsoft Office document that is already open in an Office web application on Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 or on a Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010 server, you receive an error message that resembles the following:

To open this document, your computer must be running a version of Microsoft Office_application and a browser that supports opening files directly from the Office Online.

Cause

This issue occurs because the COM component that is used to open the file in the client Office 2010 application is a 32-bit version. Therefore, the COM component does not work in any 64-bit browser. Because the COM component does not work in this scenario, this issue occurs regardless of whether you have the 32-bit version of Office 2010 or the 64-bit version of Office 2010 installed on your computer.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, use a 32-bit browser when you use Office Online in order to have full functionality of the components within the Office Web App on OneDrive or on SharePoint 2010.
