XADM: Event ID 9554 appears in the Application log every 30 minutes

In Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Enterprise Edition running in a Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) environment, event ID 9554 appears in the Application log every 30 minutes.

Additionally, you may receive the following error message:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: MSExchangeIS
Event Category: General
Event ID: 9554
Date: 4/2/2009
Time: 2:38:29 PM
User: N/A
Computer: <Server Name>
Unable to update Mailbox SD in the DS. Mailbox Guid: b266727f-8724-4977-82c4-28c4db906260. Error Code 0x8004010f

This issue occurs because the user object that is associated with the mailbox was deleted in Active Directory.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Run the following command to return the disconnected mailbox GUIDs:
    Get-MailboxStatistics -Server <server> | where { $_.DisconnectDate -ne $null } | Select MailboxGUID
  2. Compare the list of returned GUIDs with the mailbox GUID in event 9554.
  3. If you find a match, use the following command to delete the Mailbox GUID:

    Get-MailboxStatistics -database "server\database" | where {$_.disconnectdate -ne $null} | foreach {Remove-mailbox -database $_.database -storemailboxidentity $_.mailboxguid}
    Note This command first retrieves all disconnected mailboxes from the server or database and then runs the Remove-mailbox command for every mailbox. If you do not use the Remove-Mailbox command, the disconnected mailbox will be cleared automatically after the mailbox store's retention period.
