A1: Microsoft Product Activation tries to reduce counterfeit software, and to make sure that Microsoft customers receive the software quality that they expect. The goal of Product Activation is to reduce a form of piracy known as "casual copying" or "softlifting." Casual copying is a form of piracy characterized by the sharing of software between people in a way that infringes on the software's end user license agreement (EULA).
Activation is a new feature in Office Mac 2011. All previous versions of Office for Mac, other then trial, did not require Activation.
After you activate the software product, a specific product key is assigned to the computer hardware on which you installed the product. Product Activation is required to use the product. If you choose to click on the Activate Later button, the product will run for 15 days only. When launching an application it will remind you to activate with the following message "You must activate your copy of Office for Mac within 15 days."
If you choose to not to Activate after 15 days, the product will not launch and the following message will be displayed "You must activate your copy of Office for Mac before you can use it."

A2: Microsoft Product Activation enables you to start and use the product without using the disc.
Q3: What information is collected, processed, or transmitted during the activation process?
A3: When you activate the software product, the product key information is sent to Microsoft together with a hardware hash. The hardware hash is a non-unique number that is generated by using the computer's hardware configuration. The hardware hash does not represent any personal information or information about the product. The hardware hash cannot be used to determine the make or the model of the computer. Additionally, the hardware hash cannot be backward-calculated to determine the raw computer information. In addition to standard computer information, some additional language settings are collected. This information is not used to identify you. The information is used only to confirm that you have a licensed copy of the product, and to aggregate the information for statistical analysis.
Q4: How many product keys comes with Home and Student or Home and Business?
A4: Both Home and Student as well as Home and Business comes with only one (1) product key. You can use 1 product key to install/activate the product on multiple computers. The number of computers the product can be activated on are explained in Q5.
Q5: How many times can I activate the product?
A5: There is no limit to the number of times that you can activate the software product on the same computer. For example, you can remove and install or activate the product any number of times. For number of computers you can activate the product, see the Microsoft Software License Terms. Under the section for your version of product read the Installation and Use Rights. For example, if you have Office Home and Business 2011, see Section 2 and read 2. Installation and Use Rights.
Q6: Can I install the product on more than one computer?
A6: It depends on the version of product you have purchased. Pease refer to the End-User Agreement (Microsoft Software License Terms) for more information about how many computers you can install the product on. See Q5 in this document for steps on how to locate the Microsoft Software License Terms.
Q7: How do I activate?
A7: To activate the product, follow these steps:
|1. Launch application and click Enter your product key.|
|2. Review the Software License Agreement and click Continue.|
|3. You must agree to Software License Agreement. Click Continue.|
|4. Enter your product key and click Activate. |
The Activation Wizard automatically contacts the Microsoft licensing servers through your Internet connection. When you activate the product by using the Internet, the product key is sent to Microsoft through an encrypted transfer. If you decide to activate the product through the Internet and you are not already connected, the wizard alerts you that there is no connection. Click either Activate by Phone or Activate later.
Note Do not lose the product key. Keep the packaging, or note the number. Keep the number information in a safe location.
Your product key is a unique sequence of 25 letters and numbers divided into groups of 5.
If you purchased a box with a DVD: The product is located on the back of the Office for Mac DVD sleeve.
If you purchase through a web site: The product key is sent to you in email with the title Microsoft Office for Mac – Order Confirmation”

Your copy of <product title> is now activated.
Important When you telephone the Activation Center, you are prompted to read the Installation ID numbers.
Note Activation Center numbers are not listed for all locations in this article because telephone contact numbers vary by license and also by country or region. The Activation Wizard gives you the number to telephone the Activation Center.
