Applies to: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Developer EditionMicrosoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise EditionMicrosoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise X64 Edition

Symptoms

You are not able to change the default location for Full-Text Catalogs.

Cause

This behavior is by design. Installation makes the default location to be the same location as the Data folder under the sibling folder FTDATA.

Resolution

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

To specify a different default location for all full-text catalogs, you can modify the following registry key.

HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.x\MSSQLServer\FullTextDefaultPath

More Information

SQL Server installation by default points the full-text catalog location to be at the following location, though your exact path may vary.

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.x\MSSQL\FTData

Unless specified in the Create Fulltext Catalog statement, all full-text catalogs will be created in the default location.
