Symptoms


When you try to open an Excel file on a 32-bit computer, you may receive the following error message:

Excel cannot complete this task with available resources. Choose less data or close other applications.

Excel found unreadable content in 'Book1.xlsb'. Do you want to recover the contents of this workbook? If you trust the source of this workbook, click Yes.


Cause


This issue occurs when the Excel file was created using the 64-bit version of Excel and exceeds the memory limitations available in the 32-bit version of Excel. 

This issue occurs when the Excel file was created on a 64-bit computer and the size of the Excel file is larger than the amount of the memory that is available on the 32-bit computer.

Resolution


To work around this issue, open the Excel file by using a 64-bit version of Excel that is running on a 64-bit computer.
