The gethostbyaddr function returns the host name of a WINS server unexpectedly on a Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3-based device

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3-based device.
  • You configure a Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) server on the device to use a static IP address.
  • An application calls the gethostbyaddr function to query the host name of a specified IP address.
In this scenario, the gethostbyaddr function returns the host name of the WINS server unexpectedly.

Note This issue does not occur if you configure the WINS server to obtain a dynamic IP address through Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).
