Symptoms

Issue 1

Consider the following scenario:

  • You configure the Global Object Access Auditing Group Policy setting on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7.

Note You can configure the Group Policy setting by using the Group Policy Management Editor MMC snap-in or by using the auditpol /resourceSACL command.

  • You apply success auditing for the built-in Administrators group.

  • You log on to the computer by using a member account of the built-in Administrators group.

  • You perform an action that is audited by the Global Object Access Auditing Group Policy setting.

In this scenario, an event that has Event ID 4670 is missing from the event log.

Issue 2

Consider the following scenario:

  • You configure a deny-only security ID (SID) for auditing the built-in Administrators group by using an audit access control entry (ACE) on a file for auditing success.

  • You log on to the computer by using a member of the built-in Administrators group. However, you do not use elevated privileges.

  • You successfully access or make a change to the file by using the audit ACE.

In this scenario, an event that has Event ID 4670 or Event ID 4663 is missing from the event log, depending on the kind of event that you audit.

The event log entries for the events that have Event ID 4670, Event ID 4907, and Event 4663 resemble the following:

Cause

Cause of Issue 1

This issue occurs because the Global Object Access Auditing Group Policy setting does not audit the built-in Administrators group correctly.

Cause of Issue 2

This issue occurs because the deny-only SID is handled for auditing inconsistently.

Workaround

To work around Issue 1, explicitly set the auditing ACEs in the registry or file system objects. However, you have to configure each file system object or registry item separately.

To work around Issue 2, do not use a deny-only SID for auditing members of the built-in Administrators group for success operations if you do not use elevated privileges.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
