SBS 2011 Standard Edition Source Tool Scan Fails


You may receive the following error when attempting to use the Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard Migration Preparation Tool to scan the source server for problems:

An error prevented the scan from completing.

The following error will be listed in the sourcetool.log file:

The sourcetool.log file is stored at %temp%\Migration Preparation Logs


The error can occur if you attempt to install the Migration Preparation Tool from the autorun link of the SBS Standard Edition prior to having required prerequisites installed.


Install all the required prerequisites and re-launch the Migration Preparation Tool using the shortcut icon on the desktop then the tool should be able to local the MBCA PowerShell modules needed to run.

In order to perform a Migration Preparation scan, you must install MBCA 2.0 on the server and on any computer from which you initiate a scan. You can download MBCA 2.0 from the Microsoft Download Center(
