An update is available that adds support for DTLS in Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

Summary

What is DTLS?

The DTLS protocol provides communications privacy. The protocol allows client and server applications to communicate in a way that is designed to prevent eavesdropping, tampering, or message forgery. This update is required only if you intend to use Remote Desktop.

To apply the Remote Desktop Protocol 8.0 update for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 (hotfix 2592687), you must have hotfix 2574819 installed. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Symptoms

This article describes an update that adds support for Datagram Transport Layer Security (DTLS) in Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. This update reduces the protocol overhead on slow network connections for applications that support the DTLS protocol instead of the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol.

Note DTLS provides TLS functionalities that are based on the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) protocol. Because TLS is based on the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) protocol, DTLS performs better than TLS.

Resolution

After you install this update, you will be able to use the DTLS protocol feature on applications that support DTLS protocol on your computer. This update improves the network performance for these kinds of applications.

Note Windows only support DTLS 1.0, and DTLS 1.2 is not supported.
