The Adoption Reporting tool returns an inaccurate AD user count in Office Communications Server 2007 R2

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. You deploy Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 in a domain that contains a child domain. You run the Adoption Reporting tool for Office Communications Server 2007 R2. In this scenario, the Adoption Reporting tool returns an inaccurate Active Directory user count.

Cause

This issue occurs because the Adoption Reporting Tool searches for users in the root domain and each child domain by using a global catalog query on the TCP 3268 port instead of a standard Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) query on the TCP 389 port. Therefore, the users in the child domains are counted multiple times.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install the cumulative update that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
2603283 Description of the cumulative update for Office Communications Server 2007 R2, Adoption Reporting Tool for Office Communications Server 2007 R2: October, 2011
