FIX: The gethostbyname function does not return a valid IP address on a Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3-based device that has more than five Ethernet adapters attached

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3-based device that has more than five Ethernet adapters attached.
  • Each Ethernet adapter has obtained a valid IP address from a local area network (LAN) or a wide area network (WAN).
  • You use the gethostbyname function to obtain the IP address list of the attached Ethernet adapters.

In this scenario, you may notice that there is only one element (such as in the IP address list.

Note This issue only occurs when there are more than five Ethernet adapters attached to the device. If you disable one or more Ethernet adapters so that five or fewer Ethernet adapters are attached, the gethostbyname function returns the correct IP address.

This problem occurs because the system allocates a static memory size that is used to query for TCP information.

To resolve this problem, apply this update. After you apply this update, the gethostbyname function will return a valid IP address for up to nine Ethernet adapters that are attached to the device.
