Deleted files are not displayed in the Recycle Bin after you connect a removable hard disk drive that is read-only to a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

Applies to: Windows Server 2008 R2 EnterpriseWindows Server 2008 R2 DatacenterWindows Server 2008 R2 for Itanium-Based Systems More

Symptoms

Assume that you connect a removable hard disk drive to a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. The removable hard disk drive is read-only and does not contain a Recycle Bin. In this situation, when you open the Recycle Bin on the desktop to restore some files, no deleted files are displayed in the Recycle Bin.
Note Even after you remove the removable hard disk drive and then press F5 to update the Recycle Bin, the deleted files may not be displayed in the Recycle Bin.

Cause

This issue occurs because one of the Windows Shell operations on the read-only hard disk drive fails when Windows Shell enumerates files in the Recycle Bin. Therefore, Windows Shell stops enumerating Recycle Bins on other disk drives.
