Summary

This article describes the issues that are fixed in the Microsoft Excel 2010 hotfix package that is dated October 30, 2012.

INTRODUCTION

Issues that this hotfix package fixes

  • If you save a workbook in Excel 2010 and the following conditions are true, you cannot open or display, the Phonetic Info for the file.

    • An apostrophe (') is added to the beginning of a sentence or phrase when the last character in a sentence or phrase is a single Double Byte Character Set (DBCS) Kanji character.

    • After an apostrophe ('), there are two or more characters.

    • One of the characters is a DBCS Japanese character that you enter by using the Japanese IME (Input Method Editor).

    • The last character is a single DBCS kanji character.

When you insert text that satisfies these previous conditions, you experience the following symptoms:

    • When you view the Phonetic Info in edit mode, the Phonetic Info for that text isn’t shown.

    • When you save a workbook in the .xls format and reopen the file, the Phonetic Info location is incorrect.

Additionally, you receive the following error message:

Excel found unreadable content in file_name.xlsx. Do you want to recover the contents of this workbook? If you trust the source of this workbook, click Yes.

If you open the file that uses Excel 2003 and the Microsoft Compatibility Pack, you receive the following error message:

The converter failed to open the file.

  • The performance of Excel performance degrades when you select many special cells on large worksheets.

  • Consider the following scenario:

    • User A opens an Excel workbook file on a UNC (Universal Naming Conversion) shared network folder and then loses the network connection.

    • User B opens, changes, saves, and then closes the same file.

    • User A reconnects to the network and saves the file.

In this scenario, there is no conflict dialog box that warns user A that the shared file loses all modifications that are made by user B.

Note Both user A and user B have installed the hotfix 2544402 installed on their personal computers.
