The first two bytes of the DWORD registry value for a Group Policy are cleared unexpectedly on a computer that is running Windows Vista SP2, Windows 7 SP1, or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

Applies to: Windows Vista BusinessWindows Vista Business 64-bit EditionWindows Vista Enterprise More

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2), Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1), or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.
  • You change the DWORD registry value for a Group Policy by applying a Group Policy Object (GPO) on the computer.
  • You disable or remove the GPO.
In this scenario, the first two bytes of the DWORD registry value are cleared.

For example, assume that you apply a GPO that changes a registry value from 0x0BADBEEF to a new value. When you remove the GPO, the DWORD registry value is changed to 0x0000BEEF instead of back to 0x0BADBEEF.

Cause

This issue occurs because a PWSTR pointer is used to point to the DWORD registry value when you apply the GPO.

Note The DWORD value is a 32-bit value, and the PWSTR pointer points to a null-terminated string of 16-bit Unicode characters.
