Unable to scan or open very high resolution file in Paint on Windows Vista or Windows 7

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You start the Paint application within Windows Vista or Windows 7.
  • You attempt to open a very high-resolution image. For example, you attempt to open a JPEG file which is larger than approximately 85 megapixels.
  • OR, you select "From scanner or camera" and attempt to import a very high-resolution image. For example, you try to scan a full 8.5"x11" page at a resolution of 1200 dpi.

In this scenario, the image may not open, and you may receive the following error message:

"Paint cannot read this file. This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not currently supported."

Cause

This problem occurs because Paint encounters an error when calculating the total size of the image.

Resolution

Microsoft is reviewing this problem for a potential fix in a future Windows release.

To work around this issue, use a different program to open or scan the image, or scan the image at a lower resolution.
