Data shifts up when you use the "Text to Columns" tool to parse the data in an Excel workbook

Applies to: Excel 2013

Consider the following scenario:
  • A Microsoft Excel worksheet contains data that begins after Row 1.
  • You click one of the column headers to select the whole column.
  • You use the Text to Columns tool on the Data tab to parse the data in the column.
In this scenario, the data shifts up. Therefore, the parsed data is not aligned with the source data. In Excel 2013, the data shift up two rows. In earlier versions of Excel, the data shifts up to Row 1.

Note This issue occurs in Excel 2003, Excel 2007, Excel 2010, and Excel 2013.

To work around this issue, select only the data that you want to parse instead of the whole column.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
