A Project file that is attached to an email message is not in the format in which you saved it

Gäller för: Project Professional 2013Project 2013 StandardProject Professional 2010

Symptoms

In Microsoft Project, you save a project in a format that applies to an earlier version of Project than the version of Project that you are using. Then, you try to send the project as an email attachment by clicking Send To on the File menu in Project. When you do this, the file that is attached to the email message is not in the Project format in which you saved it.

When the mail recipient tries to open the attachment in Project 2010 and later versions, the recipient receives the following error message:

This File was created by a newer version of Microsoft Office Project and a converter is needed to open it. Do you want to download the converter from the Microsoft Office Web Site?

Note Project 2013 uses the same file format as Project 2010.

When the mail recipient tries to open the attachment in Project 2007 and earlier versions, the recipient receives the following error message:

This file was created by a later version of Microsoft Project. To open this file, you need a converter that you can download from the website. After downloading the converter, please restart Microsoft Project and reopen the file.

Do you want to connect to the site to download the converter now?

Note There is currently no converter to convert files from a later version of Project to a format that applies to an earlier version of Project. If the mail recipient clicks Yes, the error message links to a website that contains instructions on how to save files in Microsoft Project 98 format from Microsoft Project 2000. If the mail recipient clicks No, the recipient receives the following additional error message:

Microsoft Project cannot open this file because the format is not recognized.

The file was probably created by a newer version of Microsoft Project.

To determine the unique number that is associated with the message that you receive, press Ctrl+Shift+I. The following number appears in the lower-right corner of this message:
700986

Cause

This problem occurs because the file that Project attaches to the email message is not a copy of the file that you saved. Instead, Project creates a new, temporary instance of the project in the Temp folder, and then attaches the new file to the email message. The new file has the same name as the project that you saved. However, the file is in the Project format that corresponds to the version of Project that is installed on your computer.

Workaround

To work around this problem, use the file attachment feature of the email program to send projects in the Project file format in which you saved them.

For example, to send a Microsoft Office Project 2013 file to an email recipient from Microsoft Office Outlook 2013, first create a new email message in Outlook 20137. Then, with the new message open, click Insert on the MESSAGE ribbon, clic Attach File, locate the Project 2007 file, and then attach the file to the message.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
