Windows 7 clients show Disconnected State for Offline Files over the VPN Connection

Dotyczy: Windows 7 EnterpriseWindows 7 ProfessionalWindows 7 Ultimate

Symptoms

We have user data mapped and configured for offline availability for the user. The user goes back home and connects to the corporate network using the VPN client which uses a different set of credentials. Ideally the state of the user's data should change and show up as Connected, instean the state shows up as disconnected.

In the network trace or procmon logs you will see the failure stating "Unknown User"

Cause

This issue occurs because of a design change in Windows Vista / Windows 7. The credential manager in Windows Vista / Windows 7 presents the remote access credentials for authentication to the local resource. These credentials are not accepted, and you never get connected back to the resource and fail with error "STATUS_NO_SUCH_USER"

Resolution

To resolve this issue, you must use the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) of the local resource to access it. The following example shows a sample scenario.

Example
NetBIOS name: ServerName
Domain name: XYZ
Root Domain name: Local
Resource(Shared Folder): Test

In this scenario, you must use the following FQDN to access Resource:
\\servername.XYZ.Local\Test

In case you are using the DFS namespace, you must use the following FQDN to access resource:
\\XYZ.Local\Test
