Virtual machines crash or take a long time to complete the shutdown process on a Windows Server 2012-based host computer

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have the Hyper-V server role installed on a computer that is running Windows Server 2012.
  • You install the Remote Desktop Virtualization Host (RD Virtualization Host) role on the computer.
  • You create one or more virtual machines on the computer.
  • The virtual machines are configured to shut down when the host computer starts the shutdown process.
  • You use the Microsoft RemoteFX feature to improve user experience for virtual machines.
  • You try to shut down the host computer.
In this scenario, the virtual machines crash or take a long time to complete the shutdown process during the shutdown process of the host computer.


This issue occurs because of a race condition when you shut down the host computer. The race condition occurs between the following situations:
  • When the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service receives a notification to stop the service and begins to shut down the virtual machines.
  • The RemoteFX Desktop Virtual Graphics Manager (Rdvgm.exe) for the virtual machine ends when the Worker session is logged off.
