Microsoft User Experience Virtualization (UE-V) deployments are frequently called upon to replicate MAPI profiles for Outlook and other messaging clients between computers. UE-V replicates user registry settings through a merge operation (instead of overwriting a key), and a corrupted MAPI profile may be generated on one or both computers if settings are not consistent between clients. Therefore, neither capturing the whole HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office registry key recursively nor specifying the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\<VERSION>\Outlook\Profiles registry key in a settings location template is supported. For example, the following values wouldnot be supported:
- <Path recursive="true">Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0</Path>
- <Path recursive="true">Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Profiles</Path>
- <Path recursive="true">Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook</Path>
- <Path recursive="true">Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Outlook</Path>
- The profile references the full path of the local .ost file (when caching is used). If the OST file does not exist on the computer (which will always be true if Outlook has not been run previously), Outlook will fail when it tries to start because of a corrupted MAPI profile. To recover from this state, you must manually delete the MAPI profile.
- Account settings are stored in subkeys that increment as each new account is created. For example, an Exchange email account's settings may be stored in key 00000003 on one computer and the settings for the same email account may be stored in key 00000006 on another computer. Because UE-V has to work correctly for situations in which Outlook has already been initialized with accounts, roaming settings between such locations is not possible.
- The profile settings may be stored in different locations on different computers. Additionally, UE-V merges settings when it applies them (instead of replacing the entire profile). Therefore, roaming the profile between two computers that were already initialized with Outlook accounts is unpredictable.
- The profile contains account settings for all accounts that are configured in Outlook. Some of these settings may require installing additional software on the computer (for example, the Hotmail connector). If a profile with these accounts were roamed to a computer that did not have the additional software installed, the Outlook profile will be in an unsupported state and may not load, depending on the software that is installed.
