Checks that call the IsAlive and LooksAlive methods are not executed based on the resource default settings in Windows

Applies to: Windows Server 2012 DatacenterWindows Server 2012 DatacenterWindows Server 2012 Standard

Symptoms

Assume that the IsAliveInterval registry entry and/or the LooksAliveInterval registry entry are set to 0xffffffff in a Windows Server 2012-based or Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1)-based failover cluster. In this situation, checks that call the IsAlive method and/or the LooksAlive method are executed every minute.

Notes
  • The expected behavior is the checks are executed based on the resource default settings.
  • The IsAliveInterval registry entry and the LooksAliveInterval registry entry are usually set to 0xffffffff after you perform one of the following operations:
    • You select the Run this resource in a separate Resource Monitor check box under the Advanced Policies tab in the Resource Property dialog box.
    • You use the Use this time period setting to check intervals instead of the Use standard time period for the resource type setting under the Advanced Policies tab in the Resource Property dialog box.

Workaround

To work around this issue, change the value of IsAlivePollInterval and LooksAlivePollInterval. To do this, follow these steps based on your operating system.

For Windows Server 2012
  1. Run Windows PowerShell as an administrator.
  2. Check the resource by running the following command:
    Get-ClusterResource Resource Name
  3. Check the IsAlivePollInterval and LooksAlivePollInterval values of the resource by running the following command:
    Get-ClusterResourceType Resource Type | fl Name,IsAlivePollInterval,LooksAlivePollInterval
  4. Change the IsAlivePollInterval and LooksAlivePollInterval values of the resource according to step 3 value. To do this, run one of the following command:
    • (Get-ClusterResource Resource Name).IsAlivePollInterval=new Value
    • (Get-ClusterResource Resource Name).LooksAlivePollInterval=new Value
For Windows Server 2008 R2

  1. Run a command prompt as an administrator.
  2. Check the resource by running the following command:
    cluster.exe res Resource Name /prop:type
  3. Check the IsAlivePollInterval and LooksAlivePollInterval values of the resource by running the following command:
    cluster.exe restype Resource Type /prop:IsAlivePollInterval,LooksAlivePollInterval
  4. Change the IsAlivePollInterval and LooksAlivePollInterval values of the resource according to step 3 value. To do this, run one of the following command:
