You cannot use the Smigdeploy.exe tool in Windows Storage Server 2012 or Windows Storage Server 2008 R2

Symptoms


You cannot use the Smigdeploy.exe tool on a computer that is running Windows Storage Server 2012 or Windows Storage Server 2008 R2. More specifically, when you run the Smigdeploy.exe command on the computer, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
SmigDeploy.exe is checking for prerequisites.

Windows Server Migration Tools is not supported on this operating system. Windows Server Migration Tools is supported only on computers that are running Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008. or Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, Enterprise, or Datacenter editions.

Cause


This issue occurs because the Smigdeploy.exe tool does not support the stock-keeping unit (SKU) value for Windows Storage Server 2012 or Windows Storage Server 2008 R2.

Resolution


To resolve this issue, install update rollup 2911101, or install the hotfix that is described in this article. For more information about how to obtain this update rollup package, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
