FIX: Interrupted distributed query may return partial result set without any error in SQL Server

Applies to: SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2SQL Server 2008 R2 DeveloperSQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a linked server configured between a local server and a remote server.
  • You have a client application that runs a distributed query against a large table in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, SQL Server 2012, or SQL Server 2014. The large table is on the remote server.
  • The remote query session is halted forcedly on the SQL Server that contains the database for some reason. For example, the remote query session is halted forcedly due to log shipping or database restore.
In this scenario, only a partial result set may be returned to the client application, and no error is generated.

The issue was first fixed in the following cumulative update of SQL Server.

Cumulative Update 1 for SQL Server 2014

Cumulative Update 8 for SQL Server 2012 SP1

Cumulative Update 11 for SQL Server 2012

Cumulative Update 9 for SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
