Printer port settings are not migrated after upgrading to Windows 8.1

Gælder for: Windows 8.1Windows 8.1 Pro

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer running Windows 8.0.
  • You have a local printer installed that is connected using a USB or WSD port.
  • You upgrade the computer to Windows 8.1 and select to “Keep Windows settings, personal files, and apps.”
  • The physical Printer is either powered off or disconnected during the upgrade.

In this scenario, you will notice that after the 8.1 upgrade has completed, when the printer is re-connected or powered on, the print device will be re-enumerated but some functionality may not be set as it was prior to the upgrade. For instance, when checking the Ports tab of the Printer Properties, you will notice that the check box for "Enable bidirectional support" is not selected.

This is a known issue.

To work around this issue, you can do one of the following options:

Reboot the computer and then modify the printer properties, under the ports tab place a check in the box next to "Enable bidirectional support."

Delete the problem printer in "Devices and Printers", disconnect and re-connect the USB cable for the printer to have the device re-enumerated.
